Academy of Management

Doc. Consortium

Call for Participants: BPS Doctoral Consortium
August 6-8, 2009

The Business Policy and Strategy Division will sponsor a doctoral consortium during the pre-conference period of the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Chicago, Illinois. The objectives of the consortium are to support mid- to late-stage doctoral students in business policy and strategy as they shape their dissertations, to give them a chance to meet and interact with some of their future colleagues, and to enhance their scholarship, teaching and overall development. To qualify for the consortium, a candidate must be in the proposal stage of his or her dissertation with plans to defend the dissertation proposal by September 30, 2009. The consortium will be held on Thursday, August 6 from 6 pm to 9 pm, Friday, August 7 from 8 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, August 8, from 8 am to noon.

The 2009 consortium co-chairs are Janet Bercovitz (University of Illinois), Michael Leiblein (The Ohio State University), and Cathy Maritan (Syracuse University). The faculty panel includes: Jay Barney (The Ohio State University), Phil Bromiley (UC Irvine), Bert Cannella (Tulane University), Steven Floyd (University of St. Gallen), Nicolai Foss (Copenhagen Business School), Anne Marie Knott (Washington University-St. Louis), Sergio Lazzarini (Ibmec São Paulo), Tom Moliterno (University of South Carolina), and Brian Silverman (University of Toronto).

Interested doctoral candidates should apply in writing by April 30, 2009 by submitting:

  • a cover letter stating: a) that you are applying to the BPS Doctoral Consortium, b) your primary division of interest is Business Policy and Strategy, and c) you commit to accept an invitation to only one doctoral consortium at the 2009 AOM meetings. Please also indicate in this letter the number of years you have participated in your PhD program, your dissertation proposal defense date (on or before Sept. 30, 2009); and why the BPS Doctoral Consortium is the best fit for you.

  • a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should verify that the candidate is working on his/her dissertation proposal and confirm the candidate’s dissertation proposal defense date.

  • a current CV (1 page maximum).

  • a summary/abstract of your dissertation proposal with 3-5 keywords identified at the end of the abstract (2 page maximum).

Please email your application to Prof. Michael Leiblein at leiblein_1@cob.osu.edu with the phrase “2009 BPS Doctoral Consortium Application” in the subject line. The preferred format for items 3 and 4 above is a single Word document, with the items presented in the order listed and using the candidate’s last name as the file name (e.g., leiblein cv-abstract.doc). Please do not send these documents in PDF format.  Providing us with items 3 and 4 in a Word document allows us to easily create a handout summarizing each participant’s information for distribution to consortium participants. . Item 2 may be submitted by the candidate, along with the other documents, or separately, by the dissertation chair, in either Word or PDF format.

Any questions concerning the Consortium may be addressed to Prof. Michael Leiblein (leiblein_1@fisher.osu.edu), Prof. Cathy Maritan (cmaritan@syr.edu), or Prof. Janet Bercovitz (jbercov@illinois.edu). Participants will be notified of their selection in late May, 2009.
