Call for Participants: BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop
Saturday, August 8, 2009, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Hyatt Regency Chicago

The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2009 Academy of Management Meeting in Chicago. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2009, 8:00 a.m.-12 noon. Pre-registration is required.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups.

Finalists from last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Natarajan Balasubramanian (Florida International U.), Olivier Chatain (U. of Pennsylvania), Benjamin Hallen (U. of Maryland), Dinesh Iyer (Ohio U.), Evan Rawley, (U. of Pennsylvania), Jianyun Tang (Memorial U. of Newfoundland).

Senior faculty who will participate include: Ron Adner (Dartmouth U.), Tom Brush (Purdue U.), Kathy Eisenhardt (Stanford U.), Marvin Lieberman (UCLA) and Mariko Sakakibara (UCLA).

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register at https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The deadline to pre-register is July 10, 2009. In addition, submit a brief summary of your dissertation research interests to Olivier Chatain at chatain@wharton.upenn.edu with the phrase “BPS Managing Your Dissertation” in the title. If you have questions, please contact Olivier Chatain.
